Privacy policy
In short
- What you type, what you say and your translations are processed on your phone and sent to no one.
- Microphone audio is not recorded or stored.
- History stays on your device only, until you delete it.
- There are no accounts or ads, and we receive no data about you.
- Internet is used to download the languages. In addition, Google's translation component sends technical usage and diagnostic data to Google, which does not include your text or your voice.
1. Scope
This policy describes how the Babel Translator app for Android ("the app"), identified by the package name com.traductor.offline, handles
information. It also covers this website.
2. What information the app uses and why
All the information in this table is processed and kept on your device.
| Information | What it is used for | Where it stays |
|---|---|---|
| Text you type or paste | Translating it and reading it aloud. | On the phone. Saved to history if that option is on. |
| Microphone audio | Turning your speech into text during dictation and conversation mode. | Processed in memory while you speak. Not recorded, not stored, and it never leaves the phone. |
| Translations | Showing them, reading them aloud and keeping them in history and favorites. | In the app's private storage. |
| Preferences | Remembering your chosen languages, voice speed and other settings. | In the app's private storage. |
| Downloaded language models | Translating and recognizing speech offline. | In the app's private storage. |
The app does not ask for or use your name, email, location, contacts or any advertising identifier.
3. When Internet is used
The app connects to the Internet only in these cases:
- Downloading translation models. The Google ML Kit component downloads them from Google servers.
-
Downloading speech recognition models. They are downloaded from
alphacephei.com, the site of the Vosk project. - Google ML Kit technical data. Described in section 4.
As with any download, those servers receive the data needed for the connection, such as your IP address. Translating, dictating, holding a conversation and browsing history do not require a connection: you can use the app in airplane mode.
4. Third-party components
Google ML Kit (translation)
Translation runs on the phone using Google ML Kit. According to Google's documentation, when a connection is available this component sends usage and diagnostic data to Google: device information (manufacturer, model, OS version), the app's name and version, a per-installation identifier, performance metrics, component configuration, event type (for example, a model download) and error codes. Google states that this data is encrypted in transit and is not transferred to third parties. It does not include the text you translate. The app offers no way to turn this off; without a connection, nothing is sent.
More information: ML Kit data disclosure and Google's privacy policy.
Vosk (speech recognition)
Speech recognition runs on the phone using the open-source Vosk library. It sends no audio or text. Its only contact with the Internet is the model download mentioned in section 3.
Your phone's text-to-speech engine
Reading aloud is done by the text-to-speech engine installed on your phone (for example, Google's or the manufacturer's), which is not part of the app. The app picks a voice that works offline when one exists. If a language only has voices that require a connection, that engine might send the text to its provider to synthesize it; the Languages screen shows whether each language's voice is available offline. How that data is handled depends on the engine's provider.
5. What the app does not do
- It has no servers of its own and sends us no data.
- It shows no ads and includes no advertising tools.
- It does not require or allow creating an account.
- It does not record conversations or store audio files.
- It does not listen in the background: the microphone is closed when you leave the app.
- It does not sell or share personal data.
6. Permissions
- Microphone. Requested the first time you use dictation or conversation mode. You can deny it and still translate typed text.
- Internet. For the downloads and technical data described in sections 3 and 4.
7. Sharing
If you use the Copy or Share buttons, the translation text goes to the clipboard or to the app you choose. This happens only when you ask for it, and from then on that app's policy applies.
8. Retention and deletion
- You can delete history entries one by one or clear it entirely, and turn saving off.
- You can delete language models from the Languages screen.
- Uninstalling the app deletes the history, preferences and models.
- The app's data is excluded from Android backup.
9. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal data from children.
10. This website
This site uses no cookies, forms or analytics tools. It is hosted on GitHub Pages, which as a hosting provider may log technical data about visits, such as IP addresses, under its own privacy policy.
11. Changes to this policy
If the app changes in a way that affects what is described here, we will update this page and its effective date before releasing the change.
12. Contact
